Alberta Angus Association Hall of Fame Induction “Breed Builder”
Beiseker Red Angus - Peter and Maxine Schmaltz

Presenters Doug & Wendy Newton with Maxine & Peter Schmaltz
When we submitted the nomination for Beiseker Red Angus we
stated “Peter and Maxine BELIEVE in Red Angus Cattle”. In
preparing for this presentation I decided to look up the word“Believe” and found the definition to be:
• To have faith in
• To trust a statement or promise of a person
How fitting is this definition when you talk about Beiseker Red
Angus and Peter and Maxine Schmaltz.
The history of Beiseker Red Angus goes back prior to 1973.
Peter originally started with black angus cows but decided to step
forward and show his faith in the Red Angus cattle. Maxine on
the other hand come from a strong Hereford family background
but also decided to have faith in Red Angus and the rest is
history in the making. In the late 70 and 80 they were very active
in the show circuit and Maxine and her son Mark took many
cattle on the road while Peter stayed home and looked after the
home front. They believe to build a strong herd you had to have
an extensive culling program and have held their herd to about
50 producing females. In 1994 they decided is was time to take
a back seat and joined forces with their daughter Karin along with
John, Jim and Laurie Brigan of Red Rock Red Angus. I guess it
is true about a back seat driver’s because we have personally
seen Red Rock Red Angus and Beiseker Red Angus processing
their cows and Peter and Maxine are certainly at the front of the
chute when it comes to evaluating the cattle, running the tattoo
gun, keeping the records or helping in any way with processing of
the cattle. Yes they have retired but they are still very active with
the cattle. They attend the major sales and events around the
western provinces every year. They have been involved with the
Angus business for over 35 years and they still have faith in this
breed.
The start of the herd came from the Pinehurst herd of Jim Wright
at Dewinton and Rodger’s Red Angus at Millerville. In due
course, animals were acquired from Red Line herd of Jim Good
at Alhambra, Mackenzie Bros herd at Mountain View and from
Red Roundup and Canadian Western Agribition Sales.
Obtaining quality herdsires is one of the main goals of Peter and
Maxine’s and included:
• RED MAC 38F which was the first Red Angus Bull to become
Grand Champion at the 1976 Calgary Bull Sale.
• RED BADENOCH ERIC which was acquired from the Wilmo
Angus Ranch
• RED PREMIER PATRIOT 16 – yes you heard me right – RED
PREMIER PATRIOT 16 which was imported from the US with
joint ownership with Red Fine Line Ranch and Red Eagle
Acres – think about the breed building results from this sire
• RED GET-A-LONG LICORICE
• And most recently the co ownership of RED BRYLOR
MASTER PLAN 17M
Beiseker Red Angus have had many successes in the show ring
and have sold animals world wide. Some of the notable animals
include:
• RED BRA SHOSONE NATIONAL was purchased by Dr.
Alfredo C Witt of Buenos Aire. This young sire was one of
the forerunners of the Red Angus Bulls exported to
Argentina.
• RED BRA FIRST CLASS 13R was purchased by Pendleton
Red Angus Ranch in Colorado and went on to become the
Bull Calf Champion and Grand Champion Bull at the Denver
National Western Stock Show in 1983
• They have had 2 Club Red Champions RED BRA DOUBLE
EXPOSURE 51R (1983), Red BRA FIRECRACKER 33X
(1988) and 1 Club Red Reserve Champion RED BRA
REDWHEEL 33T(1985). They have sold many notable
females through the Red Round Up sale.
• RED BRA females have been exported to the US, Denmark
and South Africa and embryo’s have been exported to
Australia
Just take a brief look through your Red Angus pedigrees and you
will agree that Beiseker Red Angus has certainly had a role in
building the Red Angus breed here in Canada and world wide.
In 1990, Beiseker Red Angus started the Prairie Grass Bull Sale
at Cereal, Alberta which was moved to Schetzsle Livestock in
Veteran, Alberta in 1993. This bull sale has continued to date
and now sells around 60-80 top quality bulls in conjunction with
Red Rock Red Angus. This sale is held the first Friday in April.
Peter and Maxine continue to give back to the Angus business.
Peter has served on the Canadian Red Angus Promotional
Society, they have donated the 1987 Red Roundup donation
heifer and they continue to sponsor a class at Farm Fair
International. Maxine claim to fame is her records of past events.
One night we went to visit Peter and Maxine fishing for
information to make this nomination Maxine went to the
basement and came up with every Red Round Up catalogue and
other major show and sales catalogue. It was truly amazing that
she has kept all that information. Of course, let’s not forget
Peter’s hospitality. It is second to none. They are great
Ambassadors to our Angus fraternity.
Let’s just take a moment to share in the pictures from Beiseker
Red Angus.
The second definition of believe is “to trust a statement or
promise of a person”. Peter and Maxine have always stood
behind their animals and have gained much respect from other
Angus breeders for being just themselves. In the history book
they stated “the business has been good to us, giving us many
friends and pleasant memories” It is now time for us to recognize
them for their involvement in this business, building the Angus
breed, their continued contribution and of course their friendship
to those in the Angus family. For us personally, they have been
great mentors and we appreciate all the support and advice they
have given us in building our herd.
Fellow Angus Breeders would you please join me in welcoming
Beiseker Red Angus – Peter and Maxine Schmaltz Breed
Builder Inductees to the 2008 AAA Hall of Fame
Nominated and presented by Doug & Wendy Newton. |
